It was a cool Saturday (race day) morning. If I only new......., I should have arrived earlier. By the time I got there the parking lot was already fool. I checked-in and brought my bike to the transition area.
The morning was chilly and very windy, indeed. In fact, it was so chilly that I got cold even before the swim began. On my way to the swim start I heard TOM-a-Lot yelling to me “Go Team IRONTOM.” While waiting for the gun to go off, I noticed that about 80% of the athletes in my wave were wearing wet suites (I did not). Initially, I did not think it would make a difference since I never swam in one before. Was I ever wrong about that.
By the time I got to the first buoy I was having a tough time breathing, my body was getting colder and the waves were crashing against my head. I ended up swimming almost all the strokes I practiced with the Masters; free style with my face out of the water, breast stroke and a decent amount of kick on my back. Somehow, I missed the dolphin but there is always the next time. Past the turn around buoy I started feeling better and my breathing became normal. My swimming performance placed me somewhere in the middle of the pack (about 90th out of 170), with which I was quite pleased.
I really took my time in the transition, and later, instead of running, I decided to walk my bike to the road (I may reconsider this strategy at the next race). Once on the bike, I was still hyperventilating from the swim. The short bike course brought me back to the transition area, in what I thought, was no time at all - however, it placed me in the high 130’s, overall. At that time I also noticed my family there. My Mother, Sister and her kids made it to the race to cheer me on.
Once on the run I finally started to warm up. The run was very pretty as it took us off road. I covered the 5K in about 28 and a half minutes, which perhaps, was not great but placed me again in the 90’s. Overall, I finished 120th, with the official time of 1 hour 38 minutes. It also placed me in the middle of my age group. In a nice gesture, TOM-a Lot came over after the race, introduced himself and congratulated me on a good race – I really appreciated that.
So, what have I learned?
1. Arrive to the race early;
2. Wear wetsuit whenever and wherever possible, regardless of the season;
3. Try incorporating a dolphin stroke into my swimming (just kidding);
4. Swim, bike and run faster.

Team's Membership Reaches Double Digits
Team IRONTOM welcomes its 10th member. TOMmy, is a thirty-nine year old who is trying to get into the world of triathlon.
One of my goals is to wean myself off of extensive weight lifting routines, which I’ve been doing, since junior high school, and into triathlon shape. I’ve done cardio work for a number of years but not to the extent I have in the last three. I started out with running the Cigna corporate 5K road race for an old employer and then did a number of other 5k and 5 mile races mostly to prepare for that. I’ve done a half marathon, a sprint triathlon and an Xterra triathlon along with the Mountainman duathlon this spring. Next up is the Splash, Mash and Dash on the 23rd. After that is the Xterra in Hanover in August, the new Manchester City Half Marathon in November and we’ll see what else this season brings. I’d like to do an Olympic distance triathlon possibly this season. A certain unnamed team member wants me to think about doing a 70.3 next year or the year after. At this point I think it will be the year after. (I need some time to shed some of the extra muscle mass from lifting.)

TOM(eaglets) Were Flying at Eagleman 70.3 .....Literally and Figuratively. Also, Invaluable Lessons Learned

Saturday, the day before the race, was filled with the usual day-before stuff to do. The drive down to Cambridge was relatively painless and TOMasz was very good about putting up with an incessant stream of inane chatter from the front seat while he tried to read in the back. Upon arriving in Cambridge, a lovely seaside town, we learned the second invaluable triathlon lesson of the weekend: It is not enough to know how to get to the town, directions to the race venue itself are equally important.

The long walk to the transition was not, however, without benefit. Ample opportunities presented themselves to us to build up the team's supplies: a grill, a skateboard ramp, and an old mattress and boxspring were all being generously left free for the taking on the sidewalk. Unfortunately we didn't have the logistic capabilities to partake of this treasure trove. The bikes, eventually, got racked and thoughts turned to dinner. While we had initially talked about going to the race-

TOM-a-Lot’s Personal Account - Near the end of the run, I shuffled on, really suffering now. Kind of like the last couple miles of a marathon, waiting to die. Then just inside the last half mile, 3 or 4 guys passed me, a couple of whom were in my AG. Now, I'm totally against finish line sprints, especially when it's late in the race and you're pushing other people out of the way Costanza style. But we still had over a quarter mile left, and this would put me up or down a few notches in my age group, so I said to myself "Hensel, suck it up. Take the pain." and did a smooth surge to the finish line. None of them answered and I didn't even have to push anyone over. That crossing of the Rubicon didn't hurt to much, so I wonder if I could have held on a little longer at my earlier pace. I guess I'll never know.Then at the awards ceremony, I discovered that there was a 61 year old man and a 50 year old woman who both beat me quite handily, at which point I thought, "Man, do I suck!" Then I rounded off the afternoon by accidentally insulting winner T J Tollakson's girlfriend. All in all, a very satisfying day.
TOMasz's "Five Cents" - Following two pit stops and two "excessively" long transitions, I realized early on the run, that my plan to race a sub 5-hour race will come down to the proverbial wire. While I was able to maintain a 7-min mile pace for the first 4 miles, the increasing humidity put a damper on my efforts to maitain that speed on the remaining portion of the run. However, all in all, I was also very pleased with my race, and now look forward to the final few weeks of training and a good showing at Ironman Lake Placid in July (with Team IRONTOM).

TOMahawk Reports From Mooseman Half Iron Triathlon
Well, first things first - I must say that we had ideal race conditions on Sunday. Secondly, TOMb and I had the best race suits out of everyone in the race. Now on to the race. I went to the race alone this year. My Ironwife was unable to support me because she had a meeting scheduled for her upcoming Habitat trip (I need to talk to her about her priorities :)). My kids were training for their summer vacation, which would be sleeping late in the morning. Upon my arrival, I was glad to see TOMb in the Transition area. After racking my bike TOMb and I went for a walk and scouted out the swim course. My guess was that the water would be cold and sure enough, it was. I think it was about 61 degrees. Actually, it was warmer than 2 years ago, when it dipped to about 58 degrees. Man, that was cold! I felt like a Popsicle after I got out. TOMb and I hung out together and got ready for the waves to start. We saw Becky (TOMb's wife) who was in a good mood despite the chilly air and mosquitoes the size of quarters. TOMb was saying that he felt fast before the race started and his results proved him right.
SWIM - I took a cue from TOMb after I saw him start up towards the front in the wave before me. I figured I would rather be passed by 4-5 guys than have to swim around 10-15. I had settled into a steady rhythm and around the second
buoy I noticed a guy on my right who was breathing to his left (who does that?). He was flailing around looking like he was struggling. I saw him zig zag all over the place and said to myself I got to get away from this guy. As soon as I said that one of his arms hit my goggles and knocked them off my eyes. At first I was upset but I quickly realized this is no place to lose my patience. I relaxed and made the adjustment. Once that happens you can never really see clear with the fog and water in your goggles. I continued on by following swim caps ahead of me. I hit the beach in 35 minutes. as compared to 39 minutes last year.
BIKE - I got on the bike and started making my way around the course. Surprisingly, I didn't encounter a lot of traffic. This is one thing I like about the longer distance races. I finished the bike in about 3 hours and 1 minute while averaging 18.5 mph. Compared to an average of 17.5 last year, I was very satisfied.
RUN - I put my running shoes on and hit the road. After I got my legs under me, I got into a steady pace until a stitch hit me right under the ribs. I gutted it out for a 1/2 mile using deep breathing and it eventually went away. I saw TOMb out on the Run and I knew that he was having a good race. He was looking strong out there and I was not making any ground on him when I saw him during the 2 loops.
I felt good too and ran the first loop in 1 hour and the second loop in 49 minutes for a 1 hour 49 minutes half. I hit the finish line and saw TOMb and Becky and his mom
and dad. Becky took a picture of us and I could see the steam coming off our bodies which was funny. We both agreed that it was a good day. TOMb finished in 5:15 and I finished in 5:31. In 2006 I finished the Moose course in 6:09. I managed to "chop" 38 minutes off last year's time. I am looking forward to continuing my training leading up to Ironman USA in Lake Placid and to test myself on the big course. This being my first IM, I will be respecting the IM distance and will try and have as much fun out there as possible.

T2 Posts a Podium Position in 16th Annual Covered Bridges 1/2 Marathon
(AP) Sighting excellent running condition, T2 paced a 7:21 per mile to a 1:36:21 overall time in the 16th Annual Covered Bridges race, good for a third place finish in the "elder" division.
We Have a NewTOM
Welcome to our new TOMette and congratulations on her great performance at the Mooseman International-Distance Triathlon on June 2nd. Here is who she is:
NewTOM is new to triathlon, coming from a team sport background of soccer, lacrosse and ultimate frisbee with a fair amount of telemark and nordic skiing mixed in as well. Thanks to the encouragement of fellow swimmers, especially TOMboy, I’ve entered the triathlon world and am both humbled and excited by it. Looking forward to the summer of training with sight set on Timberman in August.

Yet-to-be-named Tom exits the water after a smokin' 24:43 minute swim...
And then is a whizzing blur after riding an average 18.9 mph over 27.25 miles.
Tomomma heads out on the bike all decked out in her Team IronTom kit... pretty slick, eh?...
...and then cruises back in after an average 18 mph ride over the 27.25 miles of course.
Yet-to-be-named Tom also smoked the run, averaging 7:47 min. miles over 10K.
